Beating Another Person is A Crime! You Have the Right Not to Be Abused. You Can Chose to Change the Situation.

Here are some things you can do:

  1. If you are in immediate danger, call the police (911). Tell the officer you want to sign a complaint and be sure to follow through.
  2. Get medical attention if you need it. Tell the doctor how you were injured and ask that it be charted. Have police take pictures of your injuries and save any torn or bloody clothing.
  3. If you are married to or living with the person who beat or threatened you, you can go to the nearest courthouse and apply for an injunction for protection (restraining order). There is a 24-hour help with an injunction. If it is an emergency, ask the police. Call the Women’s Center for help from a victims advocate and possible legal representation through the injunction process.
  4. Call the local or state Domestic Violence Hotline numbers listed in this page. They are a caring and informative source of support and information.
  5. Come by or call the Women’s Center (242-3110 or 449-1144) to talk with someone who will listen and help.
  6. Plan to attend the free Domestic Violence Support Group at the Women’s Center, or call for other groups and locations. Make an appointment for counseling and keep it.
  7. Contact an attorney or Legal Aid for information on filing for divorce.
  8. If you are not ready to do any of the above things, make a safety plan for the next time you are in danger. Think about who you will call, a safe place you can go, and safety for your child(ren). Pack and hide a small bag with some money, important papers, phone numbers, medication, and extra keys. You also could leave important papers such as birth certificates, social security numbers, divorce or other legal papers and tax forms with a trusted friend.
