Melbourne Beach Library Native Plant Butterfly Garden Planting

native plant garden

Huge shoutout to the volunteers who did an outstanding job in planting the Melbourne Beach Library Native Plant Butterfly Garden this past Saturday. This 100’x12’ strip of land between the Library and the Melbourne Beach Supermarket had been overrun with weeds and dead plants but now will be a haven for butterfly, pollinators and birds.

In addition to attracting these native creatures, the area was specifically designed to have a swale on the west side of the garden. This swale will catch the stormwater going off of the parking lot to prevent water from entering the Indian River Lagoon. This will also benefit the Town of Melbourne Beach’s stormwater baffle boxes by reducing the flow of stormwater debris into them.

The project will continue with the addition of an irrigation system, plant identification tags and walk ways connecting the Library and the Supermarket. The walkways will be constructed of pervious crushed shell.

Please come by to see the wonderful work done by our volunteers. Hopefully, we’ll be seeing more and more butterflies!
