Black History Month Book Talk - The Story of Black Hero Robert Smalls

A free presentation by local historian Rick Maule

Maule’s award-winning novel, Moonlight Helmsman, highlights the true story of Robert Smalls, a slave who masterminded a conspiracy to steal the Confederate flagship in 1862. The book has earned critical praise and 12 national awards. It was also featured in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. The story portrayed in Moonlight Helmsman is being made into an upcoming Amazon Prime film, Steal Away.
