The Town of Melbourne Beach has received notification from Brevard County that the next beach renourishment project is scheduled to begin. The following is information related to this project:
The project will consist of approximately 4 miles through Melbourne Beach, Indialantic and part of unincorporated Brevard County north of Indialantic.
Mobilization will start the first week of December. Sand pumping activities will start 12-17-09 and are expected to conclude 2-24-2010. Demobilization should be complete by 3-10-2010.
Work activities will start at the northern project boundary and work south. Once the work is started, the contractor will work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until complete.
Approximately 500-1,000 feet of the beach will be closed at one time where the contractor is working. This may result in more than one of our beach crossovers being closed at the same time. However, the closure should not extend for a period of more than 2-3 days. The contractor will barricade the access to the beach access parking lots and provide security at the beach crossovers that are closed due to the work.
This is the same contractor that performed the work in Melbourne Beach in 2002. The same dredging and pumping process will be used for this project as employed in 2002. Signs will be placed at the crossovers to inform the public about the project.
Beach renourishment projects are planned for every 6 years. However, conditions are constantly monitored. Therefore, the time period for renourishment can be less or more than 6 years. The last renourishnment occurred in Melbourne Beach in 2005 as an emergency project to restore hurricane damage.
This is a Federal project (Army Corps of Engineers). Federal funds are matched by Brevard County through a grant from the State. This beach renourishment project is part of an overall 50 year beach renourishment project.
A representative from Brevard County will attend our December 16th Town Commission meeting to make a brief presentation on the project and answer questions.
We will obtain more detailed information regarding the project during weekly status meetings.
